My Ikea Pax Wardrobe Experience

My Ikea Pax Wardrobe Experience

I’ve been eyeing the IKEA Pax Wardrobe System for quite some time and I finally took the plunge! My 2 non-negotiables when moving to NYC were 1) an in-unit washer/dryer and 2) a walk-in closet. I got both, y’all! Speaking of closets, where in the world are they in NYC?! My apartment has none. NONE! Not even those narrow coat closets so many New Yorkers have had to fashion as real closets. However, I chose this unit knowing I was going to remix my bonus room and create the wardrobe space of my dreams. And that’s exactly what I have done.

My IKEA Pax Wardrobe experience really has been pretty seamless and I wanted to share the process start to finish with all of you. Spoiler alert: this wardrobe system is totally worth it!

Planning

Once I decided I would use this system as my closet space, I began the planning process. Yes, I’ve only been in NYC a little under a month. Yes, I’ve been busy busy. In searching the IKEA website and pricing Pax components, I quickly learned of the Pax Planning Tool. Here, you can piece together your wardrobe bit by bit, generating a 3D image of how it may look in your space. There are so many pieces this wardrobe system offers and, therefore, many ways to customize. Pieces include wardrobe frames, drawers, shelves, pull out trays, valets, hanging bars, jewelry trays, you name it! There are a variety of colors too.

Buying

I used the planning tool to give myself an idea of necessary wall measurements and price point. I’m old school, so I still wanted to meet with an actual IKEA rep before swiping the card. Many IKEA locations offer appointments and some will allow you to walk in with no appointment necessary. I brought my laptop with the planning tool up and I went over the wardrobe components I wanted piece by piece with the IKEA rep. In store, you can also place the order and schedule delivery. Make sure you tell them which floor you are on if there is no elevator in your building. That may make a difference in how high the delivery folks are willing to climb lol.

Building

I have reached the age bracket where convenience is key and I WILL have it. I did not want to ask any family or friends to try their hand at building this system. And I know I wasn’t building it. I hired a Task Rabbit post haste and he got the job done with perfection. Task Rabbit offers a full range of services from moving to delivery to building. All Taskers have completed a background check and can accomplish a range of assignments. You may be tempted to choose a Task Rabbit based on a higher number of jobs completed or higher number of IKEA-specific jobs completed. I get that. But please please, look at the pricing too. I chose someone with fewer jobs logged, BUT great reviews and lower pricing. My Task Rabbit was no more than $30 per hour and was amazing! Just something to keep in mind. Many of the Task Rabbits have great experience and just do not have a bunch of jobs logged in the Task Rabbit system. Be conscious of your coins.

Y’all, I could not be more pleased with my IKEA Pax system. I have been admiring them and saving different ones to Pinterest for so long and now I finally have my own! I have a few more pieces (drawers, pull out trays) I want to add and have already priced them and created a shopping list at my local IKEA. Of course, I’ll do an updated reveal on my stories once the pieces are installed. Overall, I highly recommend! This system is such a beautiful way to not only store, but also showcase your clothing and accessories. It truly gives boutique appeal and I’m all about that! When my Auntie first saw it, she said, “Is this Macy’s?” Ha! No, it’s Anya’s. The system is also completely portable, so it can easily come with me once I’m off to my next adventure. When it comes to NYC living, luxuries like this really do go a long way. I’m so grateful I could add a little luxury to my new home. For those who have been considering this wardrobe system, I hope this post is helpful. Feel free to ask me questions below! And you can catch a mini tour of my closet here!
