Not too long ago, someone told me, “You wear a lot of color, but without looking tacky.” I took such great pride in that compliment. Not only am I aware of my skill in this arena, but others are too. So often I find that people stray away from wearing color out of fear it will look tacky or overdone. Blacks and neutrals are way more safe, but are they interesting? To me, fashion is all about the statement. I love color for how well and how boldly it speaks. Over the years, I have learned how to make colorful clothing work for me; how to make a statement while still looking chic and sleek. Keep reading for my 8 tips on how to wear color flawlessly.
COLOR BLOCK
I love a good color blocking moment. It’s a great way to incorporate 2 or more colors in the same look. By isolating the colors to specific articles of clothing or accessories, the look gives a bit more structure.
ADD DENIM
Denim can often be seen as a neutral and it’s a great way to break up a color wave while giving a look more texture. Pants, shorts, jacket, trench—any kind of denim works.
GO MONOCHROME
Y’all, I LOVE a good monochromatic look! The same color in different shades is just so fun to play with. Yellow monochrome just may be my favorite. This method of color wearing is definitely for when you want to be a bit more bold.
ADD A POP OF COLOR
Sometimes a dab will do ya. All neutrals and then one pop in any accessory of your choice: hat, shoes, bag. A little color can go a long way and add an element of surprise and/or intrigue to your look.
ACCESSORIZE BOLD PRINTS WITH NUDE
Wearing prints? Accessorizing with nude can help ensure the look is not overdone and allows the printed piece to truly shine.
ACCESSORIZE BOLD PRINTS WITH GOLD
The same can be said for accessorizing with gold. I love both accessory options, but 9 times out of 10, I’m going with gold. Love me some metallic to reflect off whatever array of colors I’m wearing.
WEAR WHITE ON TOP OR BOTTOM
Don’t let the color drown you out. Wearing white on top or bottom—similar to adding denim—is another great way to break up the color wave.
JUST GO FOR IT & MIX PRINTS
Then there are the days you just go for it. I love this option as well. Mixing prints is an art and the beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. Play around in your wardrobe and see what you like!
I truly hope this post encourages you all to add more vibrant and bold pieces to your wardrobe. Wearing color is such a mood elevator and I love dressing accordingly…yes even with my colorful scrubs at work. Wear what you love and have fun while doing it! As always, you can find all my outfit details on the shop.LTK app under Surgery And The City.
I’m off for the weekend and then my 12 days straight for Internal Medicine start Monday. The countdown to vacation is on! Happy Weekend, y’all!
